Nan, Thailand
Straighter Score
Our proprietary composite of weather comfort, seasonal crowding, and real traveller interest, recalculated daily, projected 14 days ahead.
Tucked against the Laos border in Thailand's far north, Nan sees a fraction of Chiang Mai's tourist traffic despite temple murals and mountain scenery that rival it. July is deep in the monsoon, so mornings are the move.

General Information
Key Takeaways
- A remote northern Thai province that sees a fraction of the visitors Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai do
- Wat Phumin's murals are the main draw — including the famous "whispering" couple painted onto a temple wall
- Best visited November to February, when mist-filled valley viewpoints and cooler weather line up
- Traditional teak architecture and a slower pace than Thailand's better-known northern hubs
- A good base for exploring rural, mountainous Nan province rather than a big-city stopover
Nan is what a lot of travellers say they want from northern Thailand and rarely actually find — a genuinely quiet, unhurried town without a bus load of day-trippers turning up on the hour. It won't have the infrastructure or nightlife of Chiang Mai, and that's rather the point.
The centrepiece is Wat Phumin, a small but extraordinary temple whose interior murals have become locally famous — most of all a depiction of a man and woman leaning in close, popularly known as "the whispering couple," painted over a century ago and still strikingly intimate. Beyond the temple, the old town is easy to wander on foot, with teak houses and a handful of good, unpretentious places to eat.
The wider province is the real reward, though — misty valley viewpoints best seen at dawn in the cooler months, winding mountain roads, and rural villages that see very few foreign visitors at all. Come for a few unhurried days, hire a scooter or a driver, and enjoy a side of Thailand that still feels like it's mostly for the people who live there.
